We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to join our Development Team in our Durham, NC office. Under the general supervision of the VP of Operations and the Executive Team, this position directs and oversees the software engineering function in developing, releasing, and maintaining production software applications that support customer transactions, marketing efforts, fulfillment operations, and finance. Additionally, the position will establish policies and procedures that produce high-quality software products, ensure the security of the organization, and consult on software purchases and implementations in other departments. The candidate should have deep knowledge of the software development process, cross-platform interactions, and current security standards. They enjoy a fast-paced work environment in creating state-of-the-art software products.
What You'll Do

  • Own and lead the full life cycle design, engineering, security, and delivery of new features and functionality for the entire CandleScience platform
  • Partner with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to imagine, design, develop, test, and launch software that drives revenue, creates customer stickiness and expands our platform operations
  • Lead operational excellence of CandleScience and drive the technical strategy that aligns with our 5-year growth plans
  • Provide technical mentorship and project leadership for your team.
  • Coach and mentor your team members to achieve their career goals in regular one-on-ones
  • Responsible for attracting, recruiting, and retaining talent, and fostering an inclusive work environment
  • Prioritizing, focusing, delivering tangible results, and providing visibility of team performance
  • Manage a team of onshore/offshore developers and consultants located in Durham, and various overseas locations
    What We're Looking For
    The Director of Software Engineering must have the ability to work seamlessly with the Executive Leaders and Technical Program Managers to create and execute roadmaps for your team.
  • Leadership abilities with a strategic mindset
  • Excellent project management skills
  • A desire to create elegant, scalable, and maintainable software products and tools
  • A track record of leading technical projects, maintaining production software, and solid prioritization with a customer-focused mindset
  • Experience developing process tools and documentation (QA test, production software, etc.)
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively across teams & multiple stakeholders
  • Execution focus - self-starter with a track record of achievement who will roll up their sleeves
  • Excellent analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent collaboration, written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiar with eCommerce or online sales process and transactions
  • Familiar with industry-standard software management tools for version control and issue tracking
  • Familiarity with:
  • Ruby, Python, and Postgresql and/or related languages desired.
  • Manufacturing and ERP systems
  • Pick, Pack, Ship operations
    Qualifications: (Education and experience)
  • BS or higher in Software Engineering/Computer Science or a related field. In unique cases, extensive work experience can substitute for BS degree requirements.
  • 5+ years of people management experience, managing engineers, business analysts, full stack development and QA teams
